Cholar Dal (Bengali Chana Dal)

Chana Dal cooked the Bengali way is best eaten with luchi or puffed bread. It is simple, delicious and full of flavor. @sarchakra

YIELDS: Serves 4

Ingredients

  • Chana Dal 1 cup
  • Salt
  • Turmeric 1 tbsp
  • Bay leaf 1
  • Cinnamon 2 inches
  • Mustard oil 2 tbsp
  • Coconut slices 2 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds 1 tbsp
  • Asafetida a pinch
  • Whole red chilies 2
  • Green cardamom 2
  • Sugar 1 tbsp
  • Ghee 1 tbsp

Method

  • Rinse Chana Dal till clean. Put dal in the pressure cooker and add salt and turmeric. Put in bay leaf and cinnamon. Pressure cook for 7 whistles to the dal is completely cooked.
  • Heat mustard oil. Fry the coconut slices till golden. Keep aside. In the remaining oil temper whole red chilies, cinnamon, cumin seeds, green cardamom and asafetida. Let it splutter and turn aromatic.
  • Add cooked Dal. Add 1 cup of water to dilute the dal a bit. Let it come to a boil.
  • Add sugar and ghee. Serve with fried coconut slices.

Notes

The length of the time it will take to cook the dal depends on your pressure cooker. Alternatively you can also cook it on the stove in a heavy bottomed pot but note that it will take a considerably longer time.

Do not omit the sugar for an authentic Bengali taste.
