Homemade Ghee (Clarified Butter) is an essential ingredient in Indian cooking. It imparts amazing depth of flavor to dishes , both sweet and savory and is used widely in Indian cuisines from cakes to kebabs, pilaus to curries. It is very easy to make ghee at home. You just need one ingredient to make this golden deliciousness- unsalted butter. Thats it. Interestingly, when ghee is produced, all the lactose and casein are removed, which makes it part of a paleo diet. It is a rich source of antioxidants as well as essential vitamins like Vitamin A, C, D, E and K2. It contains butyrate which has anti-inflammatory properties. One teaspoon of ghee has 42 calories and 5 grams of fat. @sarchakra
PREP TIME: 1 min
COOK TIME:12-15 mins
YIELDS: Makes 1 mason jar
Ingredients
Unsalted butter 4 sticks
Method
- In a heavy bottomed pan put in 2 cups of butter. Keep the heat to low. Melt the butter. Let it simmer.
- Continue cooking till the mixture is translucent and aromatic. The milk solids would have browned and settled at the bottom.
- Cool. Strain. The slightly burnt milk solids that are left at the bottom of the pan taste amazing with plain rice so I don’t discard that!
- Store the ghee at room temperature or refrigerate.
